Setting up the BlackJack on the T-Mobile Network

14Jun07

T-Mobile

Phone carriers like to make you think that when they get an exclusive phone that you can only use that phone on their wireless network. This is partly true. If you happen to be in the US and have T-Mobile or AT&T (formerly Cingular) you more than likely have a GSM* phone. What this means is that if you open the battery cover of your phone, there is a small card that you can pop out of your phone (SIM card). This card can be placed in another GSM phone and you will be good to go without having to activate your phone.

There is one catch though; this typically works only with phones from your own GSM carrier because each carrier makes their phones locked to work with their own SIM cards. Why do carriers do this? Money. Carriers typically charge much less than a third party vendor when it comes to purchasing handsets. Nevertheless, they plan to make up this difference through the service plans and add-ons you get from them.

As always there is a workaround. Most phones today can be “unlocked” to work with any carrier’s SIM. A google search of your phone’s model name and number along with the word “unlock” will bring up webpages and forums that show you how to unlock you phone, not to mention that several third party vendors sell phones unlocked. Once you have the unlocked phone, it is simple to get all the features working.

If you have T-mobile, the easiest way to get your device up and running quickly is to insert your SIM card into the phone and go to the T-Mobile Wireless Data Configurator (http://tmobileus.wdsglobal.com/phonefirst). Here you can select your phone from a wide range of phones and have the settings sent to the phone over the air without going through any menus and changing anything manually.

For phones that are not on the list it is still very easy to configure your settings. Your SIM card contains all the data needed to make voice calls and to send text messages. The only settings that remain to configure are your EDGE/GPRS settings for internet access (if you have an internet plan) and your MMS settings which are used to send picture/video messages. You can configure these settings by accessing the “Connections” menu. The following settings were used without any problems on an unlocked Samsung BlackJack:

EDGE/GPRS:

Connects to: The Internet

Access Point: wap.voicestream.com

User name: ‘blank’

Password: ‘blank’

Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0

Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

IP address: ‘blank’

MMS:

Connects to: WAP Network

Access Point: wap.voicestream.com

User name: ‘blank’

Password: ‘blank’

Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0

Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0

IP address: ‘blank’

*GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Messaging. The alternative to this wireless standard is the CDMA wireless standard which is used by carriers such as Verizon and Alltel.

Hi, Thanks for the info. I also have a Blackjack with T-Mobile service and I tried to follow your directions/instructions, but couldn’t locate the “Edge/GPRS” and the MMS settings; can you please walk me throught it? Thanks,

    ROn

  2. Ron,

In the Start Menu launch the “Settings” manager. Once in settings, go to option #6 “Connections”, then option #6 again “GPRS”. Now choose the first option, “GPRS” and use the right soft-button labeled “Menu” to delete any connections that may already exist.

Once the list is empty Add a new connection using the “Menu”. Set the Description to be “GPRS” and use the EDGE/GPRS settings mentioned above. Once you create that hit “Done”. Now create the MMS connection profile using the “Add” option in the menu again and set the description to be “MMS” and use the above settings for MMS and select “Done”. Hit “Done” 4 more times and you are finished.

Basically to find the location for adding connections you want to go Start>>Settings>>Connections>>GPRS>>GPRS and then Add connections.

    Hope this helps.

  3. 3 Admir

well, I followed the instructions but it still gives me an failed login, etc error

“unable to connect. verify your profile settings and try again…”

  4. 4 Marlon

Hi, thanks for your help. I have followed your instructions however my blackjack is still not allowing me internet connection. What should the proxy setup be? Also what letter should show in the top right corner of the home screen?

  5. Admir, does EDGE fail to connect, MMS fail to connect or both?

  6. Marlon, are you getting any error messages? You should not need any proxy setup for Tmobile, the settings provided above should work on the Tmobile network. When it works you should see an “E” icon in the top right corner to signify an EDGE connection and “G” if only a GPRS signal is available.

  7. 7 bevin

i tried everything and still cant get to send pictures to other people. please im begging u help me please

  8. Bevin, I saw a post on Howard Forums with someone with the similar problem. Try adding these proxy settings as well (in addition to the settings I mentioned above).

    Setup the proxy:
    Start>>Settings>>Connections>>GPRS>>More>>Proxy

    Name: T-Zones
    Connects from: The Internet
    Connects to: WAP Network
    Proxy (nam:port): 216.155.165.050:8080
    Type: HTTP
    Rest is blank.

    Setting up the MMS Profile:
    Start>>Messaging>>SMS/MMS>>”Menu” (RSK)>>MMS Options>>MMS Profiles>>”Menu” (RSK)>>New

    Profile Name: PictureMessaging
    MMSC URL: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
    Proxy: Checked
    Address: 216.155.165.50
Port: Works using either 8080 or 9201 for me. 8080 is from the T-Mobile web page

Finally got my picture messaging to work. The 9201 worked for me. I had to make sure the GPRS was set to picture messaging when I was fooling around with the MMS profiles too.

As for the internet, I’ve had my settings redone for awhile. Everytime I go into Internet Explorer it gives me that message because the homepage is preset to AT&T, so instead you must go to “Menu” –> “2 Address Bar” and type the address of where you want to go. Then you can add that as a favorite and use it as your “home page”. Still haven’t been able to figure out how that works.

But the settings above should work.

  15. 20 Victor

Hi, I am also having trouble sending pictures with my phone. Is there any advice on this? Thanks!

  16. 21 Stef

Can anyone tell me how to increase the volume above and beyond the factory settings? What file or download site I can goto to get help from this please email me thanks… stef42@charter.net

    Stef

  18. 23 ALWMS

HI, EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS. WHEN TRYING TO ACCESS THE INTERNET I TOO GET THAT MESSAGE. ERROR 502- BAD REQUEST

  19. 24 Co500

The MMS settings work great. But how do you check the t-zones site once you have the GPRS set up? Internet explorer on the blackjack? If so, what address do you put in? How can I test the connection?

    Thanks,
    Co.

  20. 25 sean

    AWESOME! thanks man

    http://www.howardforums.com/archive/topic/1163462-1.html

    this one works!

  21. 26 Co500

Got it! Make sure you have everything set up just like Mohammed describes above.

Go to Settings/Connections/ then highlight Proxy, but don’t click it. Hit Menu instead and select Advanced (should be the only option in the menu).

Change Internet Connection to whatever you called your GPRS setting. I called mine t-mobile gprs. Also change the WAP setting to the same thing (t-mobile gprs in my case). Hit Done a few times.

Go to internet explorer and go to http://wap.myvoicestream.com
(notice “my” voicestream, not just voicestream)

And it works! I only have the $5.99 plan, but it’s working great on the Blackjack (i607).

  22. 27 Bill

Can you help me with setting up my IM & Email on my Blackjack? I changed from ATT to T mobile and my Blackjack is unlocked. I cant figure out what i am doing wrong.

  23. 28 Don

Your information about setting up GPRS was very helpful. Thank you.

  24. 29 Nancy

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. I DID EVERYTHING YOU SAID AND IT WORKED!!! I LOVE YOU!!! =D

  25. 30 AES

I just moved to Germany and signed on for T-Mobil D (D is for Deutschland) and followed the instructions on the first post by Mohammad and then the proxy settings post from “August 28, 2007 @ 9:41 am” and now everything works perfectly.

    Thanks!

One further question: on my screen, I have a capital E in the middle and direclty to its left, I have a phone symbol (a downward facing handset in the same orientation as a forward slash: / ) with a rightward pointing arrow at its base… does anyone know what this means???

    Thanks again-

  26. 31 Jason

Mohammad. The settings you provided worked exactly as described. Thanks!

  27. 32 Carolina

  36. 41 Tyler

Here is the problem I have been having with the BlackJack since I got it:

MMS, Data works perfectly (I do the $20/month data from T-Mobile USA), the only issue I have is that I recieve MMS messages that are VERY small. They are like 7kb when sent they are 280kb.

I cannot figure out why it is doing this, anyone else have this problem?

Also, using a different install of Windows Mobile works with the Arcsoft MMS software, but the standard 6.0 that comes from samsung doesnt work.

    Any ideas for alternate settings?

  37. 42 hazel

hey i have a att blackjack currently connected for tmobile but i cant get my multimedia messaging or my aim to work how do i program it please help…

  38. For those having problems with MMS even though your internet is working, sending one MMS should auto-provision your MMS. Note that you can also select which connection to use to send and receive MMS and you must select the correct one and not the default AT&T connection. If you still have trouble with this try searching Google for “t-mobile MMS provisioning”. I can’t lookup my settings as I no longer have this phone. Good luck.

  39. 44 hazel

Mohammad i have t mobile and the setup for the picutre mms and it worked great! but the only problem i still have is i cant send out sms messages!!!help!!!! i get a message that say :ALERT the text message could not be sent to one or more recipints. This can be caused by incorrect addresses or an unavailable network.

  40. hazel, SMS should work without any settings being modified on an unlocked phone. You need only insert your SIM and it works without any changes the same way voice calls work without changes. Try your SIM in a different T-Mobile phone and see if you have the same problem.

One thing to double check is that your SMS service center number is correct. To do this go to your phone settings>>Phone>>All Calls>>Call Options

In the box labeled “Text message service center” make sure the number reads +12063130004

Hope this helps, sorry I can not provide more info as I no longer have the phone.

  41. 46 Pat E

  50. 56 joelthrow

After you have entered the correct GPS / Proxy settings one more step is needed to get the internet/maps working.

It took me a while to find this so I would like to share the knowledge.

Go to Settings – Connections (6) – Wireless Manager (1)
With Wireless Manager highlighted (do not press the OK on joystick), select Menu then Advanced.

Internet connection – Select TMobile or whatever you named your GPRS for connecting to the Internet.

Select Done and exit out of there.

You should now be on the internet when you go to the Explorer.

  51. 57 DivineKnight

I have a BJ2 that had been working fine up until a week or two ago. All of a sudden the BJ2 failed to send and receive picture messages although I could still send and receive text messages. I went through all of the setting several times. I even removed all of the settings and reapplied them again and nothing worked. So I decided to try to reset the BJ2 the way you would the router for your pc. I powered the unit off, remove the battery for approximately 5 minutes. After powering the unit back up I sent myself a picture message and received it so the BJ2 is working fine again.

This was the solution to my problem. So if you are sure that your settings are correct and you were getting picture messages and all of a sudden the unit failed to send or receive them, this may very well do the trick.

  52. 58 Angela

Dude! You’re the man!! I’ve been looking for this for about 3 months!!! So glad to FINALLY come across this forum thingy!!! Works perfectly!!!

  53. 59 MONIQUE

  54. 60 Marcia

It looks like you really know what you’re doing, so hopefully you can help with this question. I have an unlocked i607 that works fine with my t-mobile sim. But, I am having trouble selecting a network for international roaming. When I go to start-settings-phone-all calls-networks, I can change the network selection to manual, but when I press the menu key to select a network other than t-mobile (which doesn’t do email well in some places that I travel to), I get an at&t branded screen, can see the list of available networks, but when I select one, it says “sending settings to the network” (again with the at&t branded screen” and then comes back with an Error message “Cannot save settings. Verify you have network coverage and that the setting is supported.” Any ideas on this? Thanks in advance for your help!

  55. 61 julio

hey can some tell me wat those the red exclamation mark means…everytime i send a pic message i always get a red ( ! )…?

  56. 62 Rick

I am reading these q and a’s with interest. I also have an unlocked AT and T Blackjack which gives the remote party termination message. What is different in my case is that I am on the Telus 3G+ network, which was created about 7 months ago. When the network was created, they did not include the GSM network. The phone and SMS both work perfectly. Telus has given me the APN setting. In order to get the internet, do you think that I could use the APN settings for Telus in the EDGE section like you describe above? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Rick

  57. 63 mj

    you rock.
    (:

  58. 64 George Colley

Thanks a whole bunch, saved me a trip to the network provider. This was the best of all forums page I ever visited, very detailed and I could improvise. Thanks once again Mohammad and all who asked the questions that satisfied my curiousity.

  59. 65 Markedra Wheatley

can you help me change the setting for my black jack 2 to Straight Talk? I’ve tried everything and i still cant reply to messages or get on the net. Thanks!
